Recommendation: We highly recommend using the app while connected to Wi-Fi whenever possible. When on Wi-Fi, data usage is minimal and unlimited, meaning it does not count against your cellular data plan.
However, if you are using mobile data (5G, LTE, or 3G), the amount of data consumed will depend on the codec used for the call.
Understanding Data Usage for VoIP Calls
A codec is a technology that compresses and converts your voice into digital data for transmission over the internet. Unitel Voice dynamically selects the best codec based on network conditions.
Here’s how much data the most common codecs use:
Estimated Data Usage per Codec:
- G.711 – 87 Kbps (higher quality, more data)
- G.729 – 32 Kbps (lower quality, less data)
How Much Data Does a Phone Call Use?
Based on typical VoIP usage:
- A 1-minute phone call uses approximately 0.75 MB of data.
- A 1-hour phone call (60 minutes) uses roughly 45 MB of data.
To put that into perspective:
- Most mobile data plans include 2GB per month.
- One hour of talk time on mobile data would use only 2.25% of a 2GB plan.
If you frequently make long calls using mobile data, monitor your data usage or connect to Wi-Fi to conserve your data allowance.
